History of AMTA AL ChapterThere is a lot that went into the early development of the AMTA AL Chapter we don't have easy access to, as is common in newly growing associations, the record keeping function of the Historian is seldom tended to with discipline and we are depending our you, our members who were there, to advise us of the people and events that led us to our current state of growth and success. What we do know we present here. Please don't be offended if your contribution is not yet on this page, in fact if you feel that you or someone you know deserves mention here we would be glad to include it. Send us your updates. Early leadership by Robin Ann Schafer, Homewood, served as Chapter President 1994-1996 and then as the chair of the Legislative & Government Relations Committee which spearheaded Alabama's State Licensure Law for Massage Therapists. Sherry Quillen, Gulf Shores, as President and winner of the Meritorious Service Award (2000), led the chapter through its transition phase into a collaborative and growing association. Denise Walker, as President, Heather Harris, as Second Vice President, Membership Chair, and Newsletter Editor, and winner of the Meritorious Service Award (2001), and Karl Crowe, as Treasurer, all of Mobile, have led the Chapter to increased service, activity and stability. Len Daley, Montgomery, and Julia Young Hayes, Mobile, as Education Chairs, have expanded educational opportunities for our members and other LMTs in AL. Len Daley elected Chapter President in 2002. During his term the Chapter regularized it's program offerings and grew to have 2 HOD Delegates, and expanded the BOD In 2003 the AMTA AL-Chapter adopted Standing Rules for the first time. These Chapter Rules provide a stable predictable pattern for the Annual and other Quarterly Meetings rotating around the state. The rules also expand the BOD by adding two At Large BOD Members who serve two year terms, with one term expiring and open for election each year. Len now serves as Education Co-Chair for three quarterly meetings. Heather Harris elected President in May 2004, served briefly and upon her resignation, continues to serve as the Education Co-chair for the Annual Meeting. Joe Bright is the current president. He has continued the great tradition of the BOD and Volunteer Retreat, providing a wonderful space for that event at his "Ranch" in northern AL.
